Does your BMW have a GM Transmission? Parts sharing is not uncommon among manufacturers and many times they strike up deals so they can get parts quickly without additional engineering costs. Here are a few examples of some of the most unexpected parts shared by manufacturers.

Kinja'd!!!

10. Five Speed Automatic Transmission - BMW E39 5 Series and many GM Vehicles

BMW went to GM for an Automatic transmission to be used in their E39 5 Series as well as the E46 3 Series. This transmission is known as the 5L40E and is built in France for GM. It was used in many GM vehicle including the CTS, STS, and Saturn Sky.

9. RV's With Car Parts

Due to the high cost of production for injection molded parts, most RV's use headlights and tailights from smaller passenger vehicles. Here is one with VW headlights

Kinja'd!!!

8. UPS truck with Oldsmobile headlights

Kinja'd!!!

What do you do when you need a new headlight design for a UPS truck? You visit the parts bin of a defunct brand. If you have noticed some odd looking headlights on UPS trucks, it is because they are using Oldsmobile Alero headlights.

7. Rolls Royce and Bentley Head Units of the 80s

Kinja'd!!!

Rolls Royce and Bentley used Delco Head Units in the 80s which usually showed up in many GM vehicles so these luxury cars shared parts with things like the Chevrolet Celebrity

6. Ford GT and Ford Focus Switches

Kinja'd!!!

The Ford GT borrowed from the Ford parts bin for a lot of parts but the most easily noticed are the door and mirror switches which came straight from a similar vintage Ford Focus

5. Focus SVT and Mini Cooper S transmission

Kinja'd!!!

The sporty versions of the Focus and the Cooper both sourced their transmission from Getrag and once you get down to the nuts and bolts you can see that they are basically the same transmission save the bellhousing and slightly different ratios

4. Dodge Caravan Minivan

Kinja'd!!!

Chrysler picked up a few parts from the Caravan including the airbox which it stuck into the Plymouth Prowler and the taillights whicht hey stuck onto the back of the Durango

3. C5 Corvette Door Handles

GM went into its parts bin and picked the most boring car it could find, the Oldsmobile Aurora and then took its exterior door handles and stuck them on the C5 Corvette

Kinja'd!!!

2. A Saturn With a Honda Engine

Kinja'd!!!

As part of a deal between GM and Honda, GM was able to use the 3.5L V6 (J35A3) from the Honda Pilot in the Saturn Vue and in return Honda got to use some diesel engines from GM's Isuzu division. The interesting part of the whole deal is that the Vue actually made 10 more horsepower than the Pilot.

1. Pontiac Solstice/Saturn Sky

Kinja'd!!!

The Solstice and Sky were just plain parts bin bastards. Here are just some of the items picked up from other manufacturers or models:

The base 2.4L engine comes from the Chevy Cobalt.

The transmission comes from the Chevy Colorado, which itself was a redesign of a Toyota Supra transmission from the 80s.

The mirrors come from the Fiat Barchetta.

The backup lights come straight off the GMC Envoy SUV.

The rear differential comes from the Cadillac CTS.

The HVAC equipment comes off the Hummer H3.

Steering Wheel comes from the Chevy Malibu.

Airbags and door handles also come from the Cobalt.

Best engine ever installed in the VUE. Thing was a rocket with these. It was also way easier to work on in a Saturn than it was a Honda. Saturn was nice enough to give you access holes for the front engine mount making timing belt changes so much easier.

"GM went into its parts bin and picked the most boring car it could find, the Oldsmobile Aurora and then took its exterior door handles and stuck them on the C5 Corvette"

Couldn't be more wrong. The Aurora was by FAR the most interesting and exciting thing oldsmobile has ever made since the original 442. The thing is, everyone copied the aurora (and riviera) styling cues in the 90s and early 2000s so they look boring by today's standards. But need I remind you that this was on the lot at the same time, in the same dealership, as the aurora -

The AW11 is a part bin build.

Engine and transmission - Corolla

Door handles, window crank, key in ignition buzzer, various interior parts - Tercel

I'm fairly certain that the front fenders are also from the mid 80s Tercel.

Chrysler still has a ton of relics from the Daimler days, including some of their key fobs/ignition switches, power window switches, and until a couple years ago, transmissions. Ironically the Daimler transmissions were replaced with 8-speed ZF units which are the same as those used in many Audis.

The parts-bin sharing occasionally went the other way around as well. Here's a Chrysler Sebring navigation unit:

True!! The only reason I count the GT first is because the Vauxhall concept car the Saturn's styling is based on. From the looks of it, the three twins were actually planned around the same time, but the Saturn version went public first (like you said).

Agreed. That's why I went for the manual. when I found out the auto trans was sourced from GM, I quickly nixed the idea of getting an automatic E39.

Didn't Ford own Mazda until a while ago? Maybe they still do?

If you ask me, this is one of the best designs GM came out with in the 1990s, along with the Riviera on the same platform. He's got to remember, we're grading on a curve here.

Yes that is what modern Ferrari head units are like. A Caliber head unit with a Ferrari badge tacked on.

Pontiac Vibe. Once inside it you think you're in a Toyota.

If you think that's nuts, try driving an XJ6 Series III that's been converted to a modified LS1 with 2.66 1st gear T56 stickshift with the 2.88 rear. No torque convertor to ramp up the revs before it reaches lockup. My brother had one. It felt like you were taking off in a tall second gear in any normal car. You had to slip the clutch a very uncomfortable amount. First gear in that car I'm pretty sure could hit 60mph. It was insane. It was like a sportbike's gear ratios, where first gear is just to get you up to racing speed, and then 2-4 are for racing. 6th gear in that car was useless until 80mph.

Jeeps are my favorite for this game. My 94 Cherokee had:

An AMC Motor

Chrysler EFI

GM Steering Column

Renault Seats

Toyota transmission (AX-15, same 5spd as the Toyota Trucks just a different case)

Eventually mine had a Ford rearend as well since I swapped in an 8.8.

All 2WD too. Would be fun to import one of them in 2025, convert it to 4x4, and make a sick ass offroad beast.

well yeah...

my Civic has parts from 2 generations and 4 trim levels of Civic, multiple years of Integra have donated, an s2000 component, and even an overhead console molded in that was seen in Jeeps and Chrysler minivans.

but maybe that just makes her more an ebay bin bastard :D

ATS

Engine/transmission are GM staples, but my car definitely has model-specific parts than frankencar parts. Cadillac even changed the rear view mirror and the steering wheel for the 2014 model making it slightly less parts-share-y over the 2013s.

OMG, this little plastic switch that was designed to do exactly the same thing as this other little plastic switch found on a lesser car is actually the same little plastic switch!!! I want a different little plastic switch dammit, and I want it to function in exactly the same way.

Hard to disparage too much for companies choosing a ZF auto or Getrag manual. They make excellent transmissions from what I have seen.

The original new MINI was kind of weird. With the whole Tritec motor that was a joint venture between Rover (which BMW then inherited in the purchase), Chrysler and the Brazilian government and made in a plant in Brazil. When Daimler merged with Chrysler, for a while, BMW and Daimler were in the JV together.

Versions of the Tritec were used in the Dodge Neon and PT Cruiser in non-USA markets as well.

As far as the rest of the car, many parts say MINI and many of them say BMW on the stampings.

Ha!

I drove a T56/2.73 reared Camaro once. 6th was basically useless in general. But I'm betting a gen II LT1 has a bit more beef than the Jag engine.
